Requirements and Standards for Online Professional Development Products

Listed below are the requirements and standards that are used by the NEA Academy Content and Quality Review Board in evaluating all professional development products for placement on the NEA Academy:

Requirements

  • Evidence of linkage to state renewal/licensure requirements
  • Content aligns with NEA policy
  • Supports ease of access for all learners, including those with disabilities
  • Provisions for those with special learning needs are based on the ADA requirements
Standards

Content for Classroom Based Programs

  • Appropriate, clear goals and; objectives defined
  • Program meets stated goals and identified objectives
  • Aligned with national standards for content areas
  • Expands content knowledge for targeted audience identified
  • Expands content specific pedagogy for target audience identified
  • Content is research based with research identified
  • Chunking and scaffolding are appropriate for the content
  • Incorporates quality supplemental resources
  • Inclusive and appropriate for all cultural groups

Non-Classroom Based and/or Educational Support Professional Programs

  • Appropriate, clear goals and objectives defined
  • Program meets stated goals and identified objectives
  • Expands content knowledge for targeted audience identified
  • Expands job specific skills for targeted audience identified
  • Content is research based with research identified
  • Chunking and scaffolding are appropriate for the content
  • Incorporates quality supplemental materials
  • Inclusive and appropriate for all cultural groups
  • Appropriate for ESP job category identified

Design

  • Easy to read and understand
  • Color, visual images, and icons facilitate learning
  • Clear images
  • Easy to navigate
  • Search Option
  • Diversity of Images ( e.g. race, ethnicity, gender)
  • Accommodates multiple modalities of learning
  • Supports and tracks progress through the course
  • Design appropriate for objectives/content
  • Multiple entry points

Interactivity

  • Level of interactivity is appropriate for program objectives
  • Builds and supports professional collaboration and/or professional learning communities
  • Provides ongoing feedback on learner's progress

Support

  • Technical support available 24/7 online and via telephone
  • Support with program content and implementation
  • Support with connectivity hardware and software
  • Contains frequently asked questions (FAQs)
  • Has a tutorial

Demonstration of Participant Learning

  • Provides appropriate activities
  • Requires supporting documentation
  • Incorporates reflective practice
  • Incorporates meaningful assessment of learning
